Okay, on this photo series, we are going to look at the Lockheed Tristars from the F-Toys ANA Collection 3 - it's one of the earlier F-Toys designs from 2008. Now for those of you who might not be familiar with F-Toys, they were founded in 2001 to do scale model kits of historical figures...stuff like this (which is still sold on eBay today).



They started doing scale models of planes back in 2004 or so, and in 2006 they released their first licensed airliner set as the ANA Wing Collection. No surprise as to why they picked ANA to license the liveries as F-Toys is based in the Kansai region of Western Japan - the City of Osaka, and All Nippon Airways is a Kansai based firm.



So anyways, the subject of today's discussion is one of my favorite planes of all time, and possibly one of the best "what-ifs" of aviation history - the L-1011, a technologically advanced plane that failed in the commercial market due to various factors. What sort of factors? Rolls Royce's carbon fiber "HiPerFan" design shattering on bird ingestion testing and requiring the RB211-22 to take a more expensive titanium fan blade redesign (and missing promised performance targets) - this ended up bankrupting RR and requiring a UK government bailout and delaying the project for 3 years. Lockheed didn't exactly help situations further when they bribed the Japanese prime minister+his party faction for lobbying support, then hiring a far-right leaning Yakuza member to help the ANA "reconsider" the L1011. The whole entire affair bought down Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka and let to the suicide of a Japanese softcore porn actor (read the Wikipedia article, it's pretty hilarious). Honestly, once ETOPS became popular and planes like the Airbus A310 and the Boeing 767 became popular, 3-holers like the DC-10 or the Lockheed Tristar were outmoded by then.

I had generally good memories of the Tristar - they were frequent visitors to Hong Kong (where I grew up for the earlier part of my childhood), and one of my fondest memories later stateside was taking a Delta Tristar from LGA to ATL, and then onwards to MCO for DisneyWorld. Very comfortable and quiet plane - honestly, I was sorry to see them go, but yet, time moves on.

Here's an initial view with my Herpa N781DL and the 2 F-Toys ANA planes, one with the "Mohican" color scheme, and the other with the more modern "Triton" color scheme.



This does require a closer look to the Herpa sample - this is 519212. Some stuff to pay attention to - the engine barrels off the RB211-22 (which looks accurately shaped), the top of the tail fin (I don't think its supposed to be rounded as portrayed in this model) and the rather "meh" uni-brow cockpit printing. The plane does seem to lack quite a bit of panel line etchings. The tailcone on engine No. 2 is also coming loose and would require some repairs on my part.



Then we compare the moldings between the Herpa and the F-Toys...just remember that all 3 planes are of the same type (L-1011-385-1 Tristar 1s)





Note that on the F-Toys model, the surfaces looks well molded -
the general engine pod geometry is fine, but the exhaust seems to feature these curious extensions that I cannot find on historical photos of the plane. Where did F-Toys get those engine moldings?



Since the plane came out 10 years ago, F-Toys had a different quality control regime back then, and part of that had to do with their quality control - you can see by looking at the landing gear. For example, here are the F-Toys Tristars with the landing gear







If we take a look at the landing gear supplied with the ANA Tristars (2008), compare that with the landing gear from the Singapore Airlines A330, there is definitely a massive quality gap on the newer planes.



And we can certainly contrast that with the Herpa.



Anyways, back to the 2 planes - the ANA "Mohican" color scheme was introduced with the 1969 rollout of their Boeing 737-200, and was kept until ~1984 when their Boeing 767s were introduced with their current 2-tone "Triton" scheme.



The F-Toys sets once again came with multiple decals - the Mohicans came in the sequence from JA8501-02 and 8511-8512, and the Triton came in the sequence of JA8508-09 and 8521-22.

JA8512 - the one that wore the old Mohican scheme served with ANA from 1975 to 1985, and then it was sold onto Hawaiian Airlines and served as N766BE. It's currently in Amman, Jordan as a firefighting training hull.





JA8508 - this one served with ANA for 20 years from 1975 to 1995, and once it was retired from ANA service (replaced by the 777-200) it was sold onto Air Transat as C-FWCR, probably flying holiday-makers from Montreal to Caribbean destinations. It was scrapped in Victorville, CA in 2003.





Well, that was a short overview of the F-Toys Tristars. Honestly, I think it's better overall quality than the Herpa - I was actually very fortunate in grabbing the Tristars up at a decent price as the display models were long-out-of-production and command quite a premium on eBay.

So, what's next?



Oh, I dunno. Maybe some JAL planes.

Now, we count on you further to produce 1:500 AA New Color models of the Boeing 737 Max 8 and Airbus 321; if the Airbus could be made with both wing types (not a huge request) our airport dioramas would be both diverse and exquisite!
